Research and Planning

IFAD Study
As part of the study on Local Governance in select states in India, sponsored by International Fund for Agriculture Development, Dr. Alex Ekka, Head of Research and Planning, has submitted the report for Jharkhand. The study was conducted both at IFAD assisted villages in Arki Block of Ranchi District and at non-IFAD assisted villages in Dumri Block of Gumla District of Jharkhand. The study indicates that despite the long history of tribal self-governance in Jharkhand, today it is unable to deliver the goods in terms of people’s participation in the governance of the village, management of resources and effective dispute resolution.
Livelihood Reconstruction through Sustainable Agriculture Practices
Prof Himadri Sinha has undertaken an economic development project for the Kui tribe in Kalahandi district of Orissa in association with Corporate Social Responsibility department of Vedanta Aluminium Limited. Kui tribe is living between life and death with rain-fed single cropping system without any significant secondary livelihood. The Project aims at enhancing the annual household income of poor tribal of Lanjgarh Block by 300% in three years time by ensuring year round livelihood through sustainable agricultural practices, cultivation of medicinal plants and processing and marketing of NTFP. Project emphasizes on using organic manuring and bio control of pest in phase wise manner. Project also discourages use of ground water and promotes judicious use of surface water for irrigation.
During June to October 2006, as a pilot effort, the project has assisted nearly 150 households to grow vegetables and other cash crop besides growing their traditional paddy crop in nearly 150 acres of land. An extraordinary success was achieved in nearly 70% cultivated land. Farmers have earned an average net profit of Rs. 10,551 per acre from one crop with benefit cost ratio 5.1: 1. This has generated much enthusiasm among villagers. For winter season around 300 farmers have come forward to use the technology to grow crops in around 220 acres of land.
